About our school

Wollongong Public School is located close to the centre of the city. This provides us with easy access to all the major cultural, sporting and political sites in Wollongong. While the majority of our students live locally, we have a number of students enrolled in opportunity classes for gifted and talented students who travel in from all over the Illawarra. We have a rich mixture of students from different cultures in the school. We take great pride in the level of acceptance and respect for different cultures shown by our students.

Wollongong Public School has a long and rich history in the Illawarra region. A school has existed in Wollongong since 1826. Over time student numbers steadily increased and by 1880 total enrolments had reached 218. It was decided that the existing site and building were no longer suitable and a new site in Smith Street was resumed early in 1881. A new building was erected there during 1883 and 1884. Designed by N.E. Kemp, the departmental architect, it became a source of local pride. Its bell tower was particularly notable. The new building was occupied on Monday 12th January, 1885.
