Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Book yourself in for Reading Hour

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

PSSA Term 2

PSSA Student Reports

Girls Soccer

Girls soccer was an amazing experience this term. We got to work on our skills and learn how to play different positions. To help us prepare, we practised on top grass every Monday. We got to work together as a team and help each other. Both of our Stage 2 and 3 teams did an awesome job. We can’t wait to play together again!

By Adele 3/4E

Dragon Tag

Every Friday, we all woke up a little earlier than usual. Then once everyone had arrived we were sectioned into lines to represent the sport we were doing for the morning. We all got our names marked off and headed to the bus one by one. There were three stops for the three sports which were; girls soccer and mixed dragon tag for stage 3, and Auskick for boys and girls. Once we got off the bus we got into our teams and had an overall talk about rules and how to play. Regardless of whether you know how to play the sport or not, playing was a really good way to exercise, learn basic teamwork and make new friends. I would definitely recommend PSSA to all children who are thinking about participating next term.

By Astrid 5/6C and Archie 6S

Auskick

Auskick is a great sport because you get some fresh air and exercise. Every Friday for a number of weeks we had PSSA sport. We jumped on a bus at 8.30 am. Our bus took us to Figtree oval. The aim of the game is to get the ball and score. My favourite position in the game is defence because you get to jump in the air and hit the ball away. There are three people in defence, one person guards the middle and the others are on either side. When we arrived at the oval we had fruit break then did some activities like relays, kicking and passing. We then broke into two teams and played two games each week. I learnt lots of great new skills like drop kicks and handball.

By Bernie 3N

Auskick

PSSA Auskick is a great sport. I enjoy kicking the ball and the main idea is to kick the ball in between the long and short posts. My favourite position is defence because I can kick the ball. I love kicking the ball high and far!

Every Friday we got on the bus at 8.30 am. When we got to Figtree oval we had our fruit break. The first couple of weeks we played some activities to learn new skills. Then the last couple of weeks we played two games. WPS were not the champions but we were good sports.

On Thursday 13th June, our school choir travelled to Austinmer Public School to rehearse for the Annual Wollongong School’s Choral Festival.

We had a wonderful time learning and rehearsing along with Figtree, Corrimal, Scarborough and Austinmer Public School.

Throughout the day were solo auditions to accompany the mass choir. A big congratulations goes to William Burns and Freja Reinfelds on their success. They were both selected and will perform their solo pieces at Town Hall on the 1st August. Well done everybody!

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

Service NSW is working with industry bodies to deliver the program.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

University of Wollongong Science Fair

On Wednesday representatives from Stage 2 and Stage 3 competed in the Annual Science Fair and achieved outstanding results.

12 students from Wollongong Public School competed in Australia’s largest science fair. The dull weather outside didn’t have an impact on the students’ mood as they competed at a high level with hopeful and motivated spirits.

The University of Wollongong Illawarra Coal Science Fair was held on the 28th of November to celebrate the love of science which was common and resonating throughout the sports hub on the day. 950 contestants were expected to attend the event, all hoping to impress judges with their knowledge of their subject, which covered all areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Roughly 80 schools were present, being judged on their overall results.

Wollongong Public School was proud to receive a prestigious Leadership Award, which symbolised the students’ consistency in achieving high results. Along with our group’s overall achievement, Ronan received a 2nd place out of all the contestants in Stage 2 and Shiv received a 3rd place out of all the contestants in Stage 3. All students were proud of representing our school in such a great manner.

Launching Community Hubs

Wollongong’s three Community Hubs were launched in a highly successful event at the beginning of Term 3, 2018 at Wollongong Public School.

The morning kicked off with a heartfelt and moving welcome by Aunty Bev who welcomed the refugee and migrant families to the Illawarra. Federal, state and local politicians Sharon Bird, Paul Scully and Gareth Ward along with The Lord Mayor, Gordon Bradbury then all spoke briefly and beautifully about the challenges for refugees and migrants in the Illawarra and the importance of education and community. Wollongong Public School Captain and Vice-Captain told us how having a Community Hub in their school had opened their eyes and deepened their understanding of what it means to come to this country seeking a home and a Syrian woman, who has only been learning English through the Hubs this year, spoke eloquently about the positive impact the Hubs are having on her and her family’s lives, reducing most of the audience to tears.

Children from the Wollongong and Warrawong PS choirs sang a song in Arabic (learnt especially for the occasion). Over 60 guests, included representatives from DSS (from Canberra), WCC, Multicultural Health, SSI, principals and staff from the participating schools, the many organisations in the Illawarra who are supporting the program, and the woman and children who form the hub communities, enjoyed the entertainment, speeches and delicious food.

In 3/4J last week, students were treated to a medieval feast. They competed in Harry Potter trivia, had sword fights and ate beef, chicken drumsticks, cheese, ham and crusty bread with butter. They used their hands to eat and dressed up as either Harry Potter characters or medieval characters. A wonderful time was had by all!

2018 First Lego League Robotics Competition

On Saturday 10th of November, nine students attended a robotics competition (FLL, First Lego League). The theme was “Into Orbit” (space) and our team name is “System Roverload”. We collaborated on our logo and team T-shirt design and then Bhargav compiled our ideas.

There are four different parts of the competition: the Robot Game (building and coding using Lego), robot design, a research project and Core Values (teamwork). The four parts contribute to your total score and the top six teams move forward to the next stage - the state competition.

Several problems were encountered but were swiftly solved and overcome. Our robot achieved a P.B. (Personal Best) on the day - 74 points, which we were very excited about. We came 9th out of 31 teams in the robot game and had lots of fun!

Dances, sweets and badges kept our spirits up and the experience was awesome!

We collaborated with two other teams: Project Bucephalus and the Gong Invaders - both teams are progressing to the state competition. We were particularly proud when we heard that the Gong Invaders came 1st place for the second year in a row and made it through to state with flying colours. Four out of five of the Gong Invaders were students at WPS in 2016, before leaving to go to High School. Congratulations Gong Invaders!

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Learn more about the 2019 RAM funding.

The WPS Science Expo was held on Thursday 18th October, 2:30 - 3:30pm (Term 4, Week 1), in the lead up to the UOW Science Fair. Our school was run in the same format as the University Science Fair to give the students the recognition for their outstanding efforts. Please visit our website Gallery to see some samples of work, as the level of skill and knowledge gained has been amazing. It was also great to see so many families who joined us on the day to celebrate the achievement of all students. If you had the opportunity to speak to different groups, you would have be very impressed with their ability to not only explain their project but the overall scientific knowledge gained throughout the learning process. All the children involved deserve a huge congratulations!

Year 7 entry to a Selective High School in 2020 (Current Year 5 students)

Selective high schools cater for high achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without sufficient classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

Applications for selective high school placement are considered mainly on the basis of the Selective High School Placement Test results and school assessment scores. The Selective High School Placement Test will be held on Thursday 14 March 2019.

If you would like to have your child considered for Year 7 selective high school entry in 2020, you need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). You must submit only ONE application for each student. Detailed instructions on how to apply online are available now at https:// education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7 . The application website opens at that link on 9 October 2018 and closes on 12 November 2018. You must apply before the closing date. There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance after 9 October 2018.

We had a wonderful roll-up with numerous visitors in every classroom across the school. I was excited to see adults and children joining together to solve challenges in creative ways from Kindergarten through to Year 6, and enjoyed listening to the dialogue, as students articulated the ways in which they were addressing those challenges.

Walk Safely To School Day

Today is Walk Safely to School Day, and this morning Ms Yacoub, our Community Hub Leader, and a large team of helpers provided breakfast for students and parents who walked with their children to school to raise awareness of road safety. The morning was a great success, not just because so many families took part in the walk, but also took the opportunity to chat with other community members while they ate. Given that this is one of the main aims of our Community Hub, to bring parents into the school, the day has been an outstanding success. Thank you everyone for your support. A special thank you to Aldi, Coles and Woolworths for providing the healthy breakfast food items for this event.

Regional da Vinci Decathlon 2018

On the 9th of May, we went to Illawarra Christian School to participate in the Regional Da Vinci Decathlon. A decathlon is an event with ten different activities. The ten activities would normally be sports, but we were competing in an academic decathlon. The topics we did were: English, Maths, Science, Cartography, Ideation, Art & Poetry, Engineering, Creative Producers, Codebreaking, and General Knowledge. Our team consisted of Rafael Rutherford, Will Brown, Alex Ramirez, Rahil Shaikh, Nina Zhang,, Evie Neill, Davina George and Freja Reinfelds. It was a great experience and we enjoyed every single part of it, even if there was some stressful times along the way - we're glad we did it. We couldn't have been as prepared as we were without help from our classmates and our Year 6 Opportunity Class friends and teammates. We all had to work as a team to complete all of the tasks on time. In the first session, we participated in English, Maths, Cartography, and Science. We had 1½ hours to complete all of the tasks. In the second session, we did Art & Poetry, Ideation, Engineering and Creative Producers. In the third and final session, we did Codebreaking and General Knowledge. Most of it was incredibly hard but fun to the maximum! We all learned something new particularly in Cartography, Drama skills and Math tricks. We also became better at some subjects we thought we were weaker at. We all thought it was a great experience that we will never forget! We got 1st in both Mathematics and Codebreaking, 2nd in English and Ideation, as well as 3rd in General Knowledge, Science and Creative Producers. Overall, we came 1st for the overall Year 5 award out of 16 other schools. It was the time of our lives! We all participated fairly and we worked together as the extravagant eight! Hooray!

On May 4th, Central Wollongong held its District Cross Country at Kembla Grange, Dapto. It was an incredibly fun day, although it was quite windy. Wollongong P.S. brought along a great team full of spirit and encouragement for each other. Everyone ran their hardest, cheered each other on and celebrated a great day together. Congratulations to everyone who ran their best on the day. You all made Wollongong PS proud. We are thrilled to announce that Harmony Ralph, Jack Roberts and Cooper Wakeford (who all achieved fifth place in their races) and Maeve Bradbury (who achieved first place) will be attending the Regional Cross Country event later this term to be held at the challenging Wilandra Cross Country course in Nowra on Friday 1st June. A very big thank you to Miss Bridger, Mrs Sargeson and Miss Early, without whom we wouldn't have been able to participate, and to the parents who came and cheered us on.

Wollongong Public School students Jake and Girish are firm friends who share a passion for paper planes.

Their friendship and passion is captured brilliantly in Paper Planes, the latest film in the Illawarra-based multicultural documentary series U & Me.

Paper Planes was launched as part of Multicultural March and in the lead up to Harmony Day and the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21.

"It is a wonderful short film about the friendship between two Wollongong boys who share a passion for paper planes," Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra corporate services manager Sarah Wilson said.

In the film Jake and Girish talk about their strong friendship, based on similarities and differences, and how they stick together.

"Without him it feels like a piece of me is gone," says Jake.

Girish talks about how rare it is to find a friend like Jake.

The U & Me project, initiated by MCCI and Why Documentaries and supported by Multicultural NSW, was launched on Harmony Day in March 2017.

Since then the project has reached more than 250,000 views across different online platforms.

Last October it was one of five finalists for the prestigious Australian Human Rights Commission Award 2017.

NAPLAN Tests 9-11 May 2017

In May 2017 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools. The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child's level of achievement. Each student's level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard. Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student's right to privacy is maintained. The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 9-11 May 2017.

In the numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be one numeracy test with two parts: Part A calculator is allowed and Part B where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school. Friday 12 May – A ‘catch-up' day is scheduled for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day. Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if they: • are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or • have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests. All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student's normal level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large print, braille, coloured paper versions and electronic tests are available to meet the needs of individual students. Access to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school principal and a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents in consultation with the school principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Please make an appointment with the principal of the school your child attends if you would like to discuss your child's participation in NAPLAN. Additional information about

Additional information about NAPLAN can be found at http://www.nap.edu.au/naplan/parent-carer-support

School Pick Up Reminder

Dear parents,

As we begin the New Year at Wollongong Public School, it is important to revisit the issue of dropping off and picking up students. Last year, after consultation with a parent group and discussion with the Wollongong City Council Rangers, it was agreed that Wollongong Public School will undertake a new pick up system in the afternoon, starting in Term 3, 2016.

The following procedure will continue to be used at the school throughout 2017 and its implementation will be supported by the rangers who will be visiting our site regularly.

The following steps will be in place:

1. New families will be given a laminated card with their surname on it. This will need to be displayed once parents have arrived to pick up their child/ren. Parents may also wish to create their own sign if they wish.

2. Parents need to remain in their car unless they need to buckle in their child into a seat.

3. The staff member on duty will call out the family name over the microphone for your child/ren to move to the car.

4. Children will not be dismissed if parents have double parked.

5. If a parking space is not available, parents will need to drive around the block until a space becomes available. (Please refer to the definitions below).

What is the difference between ‘No Stopping' and ‘No Parking'?

No Stopping

A "No Stopping" sign means no stopping, at any time, not even to quickly drop someone off.

No Parking

A "No Parking" sign means you can't park, but you can drop off or pick up passengers or goods without leaving your vehicle (i.e. you must be within three metres of your vehicle). You must attend to your business promptly (within two minutes of stopping your vehicle) Safety tips for drivers using a ‘Drop-off and Pick-up' area

SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS: • Always drop-off or pick-up your child from the designated area, following the school's procedures. • Make sure child/ren use the footpath-side door when getting in and out of a car. • Make sure the hand brake is applied when the vehicle is stationery. • Never double park. • Never park across a pedestrian crossing or driveway. • Never undertake a U-turn in close proximity to the school.

SAFETY TIPS FOR STUDENTS • Stay buckled up until the vehicle has stopped in the ‘Drop-off and Pick-up' area. • Make sure your school bag and other items are in a safe position, eg on the floor. • Be ready to get in or out of the car with your belongings when the car has stopped and you have unbuckled your seatbelt. • Always get in and out of the backseat of the vehicle through the safety door – the rear footpath-side door. • Wait until your name has been called out before going to meet your parents.

Thank you in advance to all parents/caregivers for their support in this new initiative to ensure that the safety of the children at Wollongong Public School is our highest priority.

Kind Regards,

WPS Staff
